In many companies, the DUERP (Single Document for Risk Assessment) exists\u2026 somewhere. A file, a folder structure, an \u201cup-to-date\u201d version at the time of an audit, then radio silence. This scenario is common, and it doesn't mean that companies don't care. Rather, it says one thing: the DUERP is too often treated as a compliance document, when it should be treated as a management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let's first recall what it is: the DUERP (Single Document for Risk Assessment) formalizes the assessment of occupational risks and serves as the basis for the prevention approach. It's not just about identifying hazards, but also about prioritizing and organizing preventive actions. And since recent developments, it must now also incorporate consideration of certain aspects of work organization, which further strengthens its natural link with QWL (Quality of Working Life).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A truly effective risk assessment document (DUER) is based on a simple idea: it must reflect the actual work being done. The first common pitfall is defining work units that are too abstract ("production," "administrative") or too theoretical. Conversely, a useful risk assessment document breaks down the work environment in a practical way: a team, a workshop, a type of intervention, a route, a recurring activity. It is at this level that exposures can be observed, workarounds understood, interfaces identified, and appropriate measures determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second pitfall is inventory without hierarchy.<\/strong> A single risk assessment document (DUERP) that lists fifty "medium" risks ultimately neutralizes prevention: everything is considered equal, therefore nothing progresses. Prioritization is not a methodological detail, it is an act of management. It forces us to ask: what are our major risks? Which ones are frequent? Which ones have serious consequences? Which ones are spiraling out of control? And above all: where are we allocating resources this year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, The DUERP (Single Document for Risk Assessment) must produce what the regulations require: for some companies, an annual prevention program; for others, prevention actions adapted to their size.<\/strong>. But the difference between a "paper" DUERP and a "tool" DUERP lies in one thing: the quality of the action plan. A useful action plan resembles a project plan: a person in charge, a realistic deadline, a resource, a success criterion, and explicit arbitration when things get stuck. Otherwise, you end up with a list of good intentions\u2014and, ultimately, that's what many field teams criticize about the DUERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A DUERP (Single Document for Risk Assessment) isn't "alive" simply because it's updated. It's alive because it's reviewed. This can be kept very simple: a short monthly or bimonthly review that connects events and actions. What happened (accidents, near misses, alerts, irritants)? What did we do? What decisions are being made? What is being postponed and why? As soon as this ritual is established, the DUERP changes its status: it becomes a risk dashboard, not just another file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, it's important to remember that the DUER (Single Risk Assessment Document) isn't isolated: it must be shared. In France, the employer must send it to the occupational health and safety service (SPST) with each update, which is an excellent way to structure discussions about risks and actions. Legally, the reference is clearly established in the Labor Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When these elements are put together \u2014 realistic breakdown, assumed prioritization, managed action plan, review ritual, circulation and proof \u2014 the DUERP becomes what it should always have been: a simple way to link the field to decisions and to transform prevention into sustainable performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
