When IoT and AI are mentioned in HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment), many SMEs and mid-sized companies think: 'It's not for us.' Too expensive, too complex, too risky. And yet, some innovations are now very accessible, provided they are approached pragmatically: start with a concrete problem, test quickly, measure the return, and then deploy it efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The starting point isn't technology, it's risk or waste. In the environmental sphere, for example, sensors and meters can help reduce energy consumption and losses: electricity submetering, compressed air monitoring (often a major source of waste), leak detection, temperature monitoring, ventilation optimization, or monitoring of abnormal consumption. The benefit isn't just about "CSR" (Corporate Social Responsibility). It's about cost control and process stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Capteurs<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the area of health and safety, the IoT is particularly useful when the risk is related to exposure or isolation. Lone worker protection devices, gas detection, noise measurement, and monitoring of certain environmental parameters (temperature, humidity) are fairly mature use cases. In some contexts, internal geolocation solutions can help manage hazardous areas, but they immediately raise privacy concerns: they are only acceptable if they are proportionate, transparent, and rigorously governed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI, for its part, becomes valuable when it enhances observation without creating a permanent police force. A typical example is image analysis to detect anomalies (crowded areas, lack of PPE in critical zones, intrusions into restricted areas) or to help identify early warning signs. If AI is perceived as a tool for individual surveillance, it can erode trust and thus harm the safety culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good pilot project starts small: a scope, a risk, a success indicator, a short duration. Then the impact is assessed, including side effects: maintenance workload, reliability, false positives, alert processing time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, never underestimate the associated risks: cybersecurity, vendor dependency, maintenance, data quality, GDPR, and social acceptability. In many projects, the technology works\u2026 but the organization doesn't: no one has time to deal with alerts, or no one dares to say that the data is unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IoT and AI are not reserved for large corporations. Accessible innovations exist, provided they are chosen for a specific use, ethical considerations and trust are carefully managed, and the return on investment is demonstrated.
